Nakalimutan niya ang kanyang I.D.

"May amoy nga."

"Anong year mo?" tanong ni Noel.

"First year po," sagot ni Mark John.

"Noel Amo, third year Saber," sagot ni Noel.

Tandaan mo, first day ng classes ngayon," babala ni ma'am Rose. "Ayusin mo, Noel Amo."

"Alam kong kasing galing mo kuya mo.

Break time kami ng research club ngayon."

"Second Year, Einstein."

"Rose Andag, may meeting tayo mamaya.

"May third year kanina, binigyan ako. Si Lato," sabi ni Mark John.

"Oh?

"Sir, good afternoon po.

"May nais kang malamang 'di ba?"

"Mark John."

"Walang laman? May lamesa, may upuan may electric fan," sabi ni sir Reygie. "Anong walang laman?"

At lamesa mo walang plastic cover.

At binilisan nilang maglakad.

"Medyo may pagka strikto at weirdo, no?"

Photuris

Luca hurriedly approached Leon as he collapsed on his chest. But before she could catch him Mary was already there. She caught him by his chest, knelt down and laid his head on her lap. She tried hard not to cry. Luca and Rhea saw her tears.

"You're here, Leon. You're here with me," Mary was sobbing and her voice coarsed. "I remember you, Leon. I remember you."

Luca was taken aback by what Mary had said. She didn't know what was going on. She could not comprehend what had just happened, especially with their vice captain's mood swing.

Leon's eyes slowly opened as his trembling right hand reached Mary's cheeks.

"I'm here," Leon's voice was trembling. "I remember." He gazed at his crew with relief and longing. "Please, take care of them, Mary." His hand shook as it ultimately failed to cling on to Mary's cheek. His decrepit hand softly fell to his side.

Luca and Rhea noticed it and tried rushing towards Leon. Mary noticed and stopped them. She gave them a silent hush with her forefinger by her lips. Leon was peacefully sleeping. The two felt relieved upon realizing. They walked slowly toward their superiors.

Mary tried standing but stopped upon having felt Leon's left hand was holding her by the strap on her waist. He was clinging on to her. She couldn't move.

Rhea looked at her vice captain and felt a very foreign ache she never knew she would ever feel. She was jealous. Luca though have calmed down she was still at a loss for words.

Mary glanced at the two and immediately averted their gaze. She was embarrassed to be seen by her two friends like that. She casted mind link and instructed the two to take command.

"I'm sorry," Mary said in her thoughts. "You've got a lot of questions in your mind, I know. You're just as confused as I am the first time this happened. So please, bear with it, for now." Mary wept as she hugged Leon's head tightly closer to her chest. "You shouldn't see me like this. For now please take care of the rest. Just for a moment. Please, let me stay like this even just for a moment."

The Fireflies were visibly distraught. Feint whispers flooded the silent pile and ranks. They were still cautious for an unknown opponent they knew they wouldn't beat. The whispers turned to murmur as metals clashed and clanged. They were all worried and fearful.

While Luca was still deep in her thoughts. Rhea immediately noticed the growing tension of the Fireflies. Her eyes were filled with a half baked resolve. But she knew she needed to prove herself to Leon. She must not keep sulking. Not even her captain was blaming her. She felt stepping up for a change. She faced her crew with a wavering determination.

"E-e-everyone," she shouted. "P-p-please be a-a-at ease. The si-situation had already been resolved.. everyone?" No one was listening to her. They were all too busy with hysteria and panic. A riot emerged at one side of the formation.

Few of the adventurers wanted to quit. A handful of them decided to throw their weapon and shield to the ground. Unfortunately, one of them hit another adventurer's foot. Next thing that happened, shields and helmets were flying as a fist fight erupted.

Rhea casted mind link but even her inner voice was too faint to be heard by the adventurers that were fighting among themselves. Luca was worried and so she went with her. The parameter, that Mary ordered, broke. There were those who wanted to see the fray. Worst still were those who wanted to engage with the fighting. The supplies and records in the middle were left unguarded. Even the commanding officer cowered in a corner. The morale of Fireflies dwindled. It was apparent everyone was agitated.

"E-everyone, p-please calm down," Rhea was voice trembling. "We can peacefully s-sort things out. We have procedures for.."

It dawned on her that she will never be noticed. Rhea decided to enter the fray. But immediately after trying she was thrown off to the ground. Luca tried stopping Rhea but she insisted. She tried pushing herself in the middle of the chaos. Luca followed through. They squirmed themselves through the crowd of the Fireflies.

"P-please c-calm down, everyone," her weak voice was too faint to be heard. Even her magic was waning. Only her eager spirit was what stopped her from breaking her magic link. "I--i-it doesn't have to be this way. We could talk this out, everyone. We're here. W-w-we'll listen. We're going to hear your grievances." She was thinking how Leon would handle the same situation.

One of the adventurers took a club and tried hitting another adventurer in their clash but was blocked.

"So we're going down this route, huh?" said the adventurer who blocked the blow.

He took out his giant sword and swung it down hard. The one with the club evaded it. The ground shook as sand scattered in the air. Some of the unaware fighters snufted and spitted out sand. They were scratching their eyes trying to get the sand out. Those who saw it got serious and immediately drew out their weapons. Some who threw their weapon picked them up and readied for the fight. There were a few who stepped back and backed down. They were wise enough to leave the looming pandemonia.

The ones ready for battle looked and glanced at each other with sharp and fierce eyes. They were ready and were waiting for one of them to start.

The one with the giant sword shouted a battlecry. He was mad for not being able to hit his aggressor. He felt ashamed and thought the other warriors were looking down on him. He swung his sword horizontally with all his might and not minding who he would hit. The warriors immediately stepped away to evade the reckless attack. But the fearful Rhea, with her eyes closed, stepped in the middle of the brawl. She was desperate to calm the situation. Luca tried stopping her but one of the adventurers held her back.

"Please! Stop this at once!!" Rhea desperately shouted. She didn't know why her feet just suddenly moved her there. Her arms were stretched out and her legs were shaking. Her eyes were closed. In her mind's eye she was picturing Leon valiantly leading the Fireflies.

Unfortunately, Rhea couldn't see the sword coming at her. She hadn't known. The warrior wielding the giant sword noticed too late. He could no longer stop the momentum of his slash. Luca screamed in the sidelines. She looked away as her grip on the adventurere's clothes tightened. She didn't want things to happen like last time.

Rhea suddenly disappeared and in her place Mary appeared standing and her head bowed down. Sheds of tears fell on the ground.

The sword hit. It sliced her right shoulder armor cleanly and sank beneath her soft skin. The momentum of the sword stopped before mid swing. The attacker felt like striking an immovable wall. A wave of air blasted around Mary. The Fireflies around felt the impact. But Mary was unfazed and unmoved. The vice captain nonchalantly looked at her shoulder where the sword hit. A drop of blood skid down her arm.

The attacker tried to take back his sword but it was stuck in their vice captain's shoulder. He was fearful as he tried taking back his sword but it was fruitless. His sword would not budge. Mary looked up to the sky and shouted.

"Filthy insects!!"

Her eyes were cold and burning in anger and disappointment. She was furious. She easily pushed the blade with the palm of her left hand as she grabbed onto it. Her eyes were more fierce and sharp. Her fingers dug deeper into the blade of the sword as small cracks formed. She pulled the sword and the attacker was forcefully disarmed.

"Listen to your superior!" Mary shouted once more as she shattered the sword into pieces with her bare hand. She looked at Luca with serene eyes. She was released by the adventurer that held her.

"Go check on Rhea, she's with Leon," Mary ordered. The adventurers noticed who Mary was staring at. The Fireflies stepped back and gave Luca a path to their captain.

"Vice captain you're bleeding-" Luca asked but immediately noticed a blood orb was assimilating the blood that fell and dripped on the vice captain's arm. It was the same spell that healed Leon. Luca wondered whether it was actually Mary who healed Leon. The blood orb upon reaching a certain size began to dissipate and fully healed Mary's wound. Mary smiled.

***

Leon hugged her tightly. His hands on her waist strap clenched. He was afraid. For that moment he was like a child, innocent, weak and fragile. An emotion he never showed to his subordinates except to his lover, Mary. He was unconscious.

"I'll take it from here," Mary spoke to Rhea with her magic link. Her captain's spatial skill had just been used and she was with him.

Rhea's eyes widened. She could not believe what she had just happenes. She was blushing and trying her best to control her shaking. She felt embarrassed. The last thing Rhea remembered was that she was in the middle of the riot. She was trying to quell the riot and Luca suddenly screaming. In an instant, she found herself sitting on the ground. Her captain was on the ground, in a fetal position, and his head was on her lap. He was holding her tightly. He was in her mind all the time. She felt exaltic that it all became real.

Certain memories Rhea never knew flashed in her mind. She had somehow forgotten long ago and they were all trying to flood her thoughts. It was her captain's smiling face. She saw her face too. She was smiling. A smile that was different than what she had always worn. In those memories, she was at her happiest.

She tried calming herself down by making her think of scientific formulas and magic recipes and tomes. She had always done it when her mind couldn't process things logically. She thought to herself it must be a magical backlash. The images and memories she saw were inconsequential afterproduct. It must be. There were no other explanations to it.

"Alternate reality? Me and captain Leon?" Rhea thought to herself. "Sealed memories?" She looked at her captain once more. An image suddenly came to her mind. It was small cabin on a snowy mountain. The dilapidated roof and walls covered in soot and dust. The moist spider web that sat on a corner. Gust of wind blew through cracks. A small bed cold and aged. The fireplace was unfilled with embers and unburnt fume of ashes. An old woman and a jar. Inside was a little firefly.

"My queen," Leon whispered in a trembling voice. He suddenly glowed. Rhea failed to notice as she suddenly realized who she was. She was looking at him with tantalizing eyes. She didn't notice him glow as in her eyes he always had.

"C-C-Captain?" Rhea whispered. She remembered everything. She reluctantly reached out her hand to touch his face. She was trying not to but she felt herself being pulled towards him. Her breathing was heavy and her voice was amorous. "Captain." Her eyes were deep in trance.

"I appreciate your kindness. But right now, please go to Rhea's side," Mary spoke with sincerity and a kind face. It was as if she was never furious at her crew in the first place. "She must steel herself for the Fireflies. The same goes to you, Luca. We never know what might happen next" Luca felt terrified at such an ominous remark. Mary smiled at her once more before facing the rest of the Fireflies. Her demeanor changed to a strict leader. She was their vice captain, after all.

***

Luca was confused and terrified. Cold sweat slid down her temple as she passed by the warriors and adventurers. Her breathing was heavy. There were many things that had just happened. She couldn't comprehend anything at all. She was exhausted.

Sure, there were times before that the Babel Gateway had malfunctioned not to be able to work properly. There were attempts of forcefully tripping its system to redirect travelers to different places. Dimensional trap is not a myth. It happened. It happens. It was in the first place the primary function of the gateway. Luca tried sorting her thought of who would've done it. A shadow figure ran behind her. She felt it but decided to ignore it.

It was clear that Mary blasted Andrew away. She was certain that the green light they saw was healing magic. But she never knew her captain to be proficient at using healing magic. Let alone the distance. Perhaps it was Mary. She is great with magic after all. Rhea is a genius when it comes to all sorts of magic. But with the state she was in. Luca doubted Rhea's mental fortitude.

The orb of blood spell was either used by Mary or Leon. Isaac came to her mind but she thought otherwise. But, then again, Isaac was personally picked by their captain to join them on this expedition. The orb fully regenerated their captain to full health and restored lost limb. Luca's sister appeared in her peripheral vision.

"Elaine?" with delirious eyes, she looked at the crowd. She looked left and right but could not find her sister. The adventurers and warriors gave her quick glances. They were ashamed to look at their superior. She thought herself overstressed and casted a spell to soothe her mind. After pausing for a moment, she breathed a sigh of relief and continued walking. The whereabouts of Rhea and Leon were near but it felt like she was walking for hours.

She thought of how Andrew could've pulled it all. She doubted if ever he would even think of doing such an act. The Scholars of the Firefly was his beloved brother's crew. One could even say the whole Scholars of the Firefly is Leon himself. She asked herself whether he, Andrew, really despises his older brother. She thought hard if ever Andrew was only putting on an act.

She looked back and noticed the Fireflies went back to their formation surrounding Mary. They were very attentive to the vice captain. Mary was strict with Leon but she hardly remember the vice captain to be as terrifying to the rest. The way she took command. It was different. She was never angry before. She was strict but she always held back. The way she handled the situation. It was just all too different.

Mary was alway good with elemental magic. She was certain it was Mary who casted the blast of wind that blew Andrew away. Rhea could, but she wouldn't do that much. If she had suspected Andrew, she'd have Mary confront him. She will not do that. Andrew flew off a great distance away. Luca thought it would be fatal but the reassurance that came out of Mary's words were hard not to trust.

She thought of Mary's physical capabilities. It would be possible for the vice captain to be almost, if not, just as strong as their captain. But having the physical prowess to be able to pull off that amazing show of strength. It was as if Mary was not Mary at all. It would be possible that Mary casted a spell to enhance her physical capabilities. But to foolishly catch the full brunt of that mighty swing was certainly different. She did not even try to block it. Her shoulder armor broke. She even got wounded. Perhaps, Luca thought, the warrior was a master himself to be able to immediately stop the momentum of a forceful swing. She remembered the struggling face of the warrior as he tried to pull back his sword but ultimately failed. She also remembered the gust of wind that followed after Mary was hit. It was like hitting a giant metallic statue with a wooden stick.

She remembered the blood dripping down Mary's arm. Mary was wounded, if not slightly cut. But she healed fast. There was no hint of healing magic that was used. But it was clear, the same magic to summon the blood orb was used to heal the vice captain.

She was lost in her thoughts when a small gentle hand suddenly held Luca's shoulder. She turned around and found it was her sister holding her. She was smiling with the same caring face she always had. Her sister spoke, her lips moved, but Luca couldn't hear any words. She blinked and her sister was not there. Her shoulder strap was caught on one of the warrior's sheathed sword. The warrior apologized and went back to the rest of the Fireflies.

"Elaine," Luca turned around and continued walking towards Rhea and Leon. Her steps were heavy as her thoughts were still scattered between her sister appearing and what had just happened.

***

When Luca finally arrived she was even more speechless. Rhea was touching Leon’s face and was about to give her a kiss. She had never known the secretary to bear any interest in their captain other than adoration and respect.

“Rhea, what are you doing?” Luca asked. Rhea’s eyes widened in embarrassment as her mind went blank. The secretary casted a wind spell aimed at Luca. Translucent and sharp gust of wind headed straight for her. It happened so fast that she was unable to react. Luca closed her eyes and tried blocking with her arms.

The magic stopped a few inches before it hit Luca. It was as if an invisible barrier blocked Rhea's magic. Upon seeing this Rhea stood and simultaenously casted five spells. She understood the situation enough to only use hard to notice spells.

Luca’s feet suddenly sank beneath the sand and it suddenly hardened. Luca tried lifting her feet but she was stuck. She tried screaming but she couldn’t. An enchantment was placed in Luca's throat rendering her unable to speak.

She tried casting a spell of her own but her hands were suddenly grabbed by tendrils made out of hardened sand and pulled her down. Instead of falling flat on the ground it made her kneel. She felt pain in her tendons from her sunken feet. Tears fell off Luca’s eyes as she tried freeing herself. The grip of tendrils tightened. She was shaking in pain as she raised her head and looked at the Fireflies. She once more tried screaming but there was nothing. The tendrils on her arm tightened the more she moved. She wanted to heal herself but the pain grew too unbearable. She looked at her captain who was peacefully sleeping. She could not cast any spell. She was in pain. No one noticed her suffering. She could not do anything. She was helpless. She then looked at Rhea. Her face was relieved and smiling.

“No one will separate us again,” Rhea spoke with resentment and grief. “It had been so so long.”

Rhea aimed her palm at Luca. The air smelled of ash and electricity. It was translucent in color, in the distance no one would be able to tell. A beam of plasma shot out of Rhea’s palm and headed towards Luca’s palms. Luca hesistantly accepted her fate and closed her eyes.

"You, lot!" Mary shouted. It was both a magic link and her voice. It reverberated that even the sand around her shook and billowed. Her emotions overflowed. "Our captain just saved our hides, and you show your appreciation like this? Starting a riot?"

She stomped her foot on the ground. It did not have any effect as their captain but those around her knew she was mad. But she kept her posture. She was the vice captain after all. "Those who are afraid and would no longer wish to be part of the Fireflies, you may return me the contract you have and by my power terminate our agreement. We will have you escorted back to Jerusalem and await your transport back to your own home. For those without a place to call home, we give you an option to be stationed there. Accomodations as well supply will be free for a month so long as you keep yourself from doing any misconduct that will either endanger the peace and tarnish the name of the Scholars of Fireflies." Mary walked towards the warrior who wielded the club. She smiled at him and took the club by his side. The warrior awkwardly smiled back. He was afraid. She waved it playfully like a magic wand. "Also, a dispute among the Fireflies is best done with verbal prowess. If you could not talk it among yourself, have an official mediate. We will listen." With a might swing in the air, Mary broke the club in two. A small part of the club held the other half from splitting. "We are scholars, after all. We're not savages." The Fireflies took a step back as they grew more fearful towards their vice captain.

Mary ordered the commanding officer to gather the contracts of the warriors and adventurers that wanted to leave. On the other hand, she oversaw the conclusion of the recent squabble. The warriors involved eagerly apologized and admitted their fault for causing the chaos. They became afraid when they were trapped and helpless in the red moon dimension. More so when they saw their beloved leader in a broken state. Mary laughed at their remark towards Leon.

"Vice captain, the adventurers and warriors, and especially those involved in the recent dispute, never in the first place wanted to leave. The morale among the ranks dwindled after seeing captain Leon broken," reported the commanding officer.

"The captain, you say is broken?" Mary asked with a smile. Her face contradicted her cold voice. The air suddenly became heavy. "Is that how weak you see Leon?" Sparks of electricity discharged around her. She would not tolerate anyone who belittles her beloved.

"Vice captain," a warrior emerged from the crowd. "Isaac has returned. He has Andrew with him."

Thunderclouds formed above the Fireflies. Roars of fury echoed in the sky. Mary could hardly restrain her resentment.

Golden Repair

Isaac ran fast while he minded his surroundings and the steps he took. He knew he could go a lot more faster but that would have just created more problems than there already were. The sand was dry and gritty beneath the sole of his boots. He felt it. The spell he casted was still there.

From the ground he felt many things. The rocky ground underneath them. A hidden water deposit unfound many generations hence. The well passage used by the ruined abandoned village near them. The diverging pathways beneath the mountain connecting the passages beneath. All of which stretched further than where the Fireflies were. There were bones as well scattered throughout and untouched. There were graves and fossilized flowers and boxed treasures, gifts for the dead. Above were the crew he just left. He felt them all. Those who wanted to stay and those who didn't. Those who were passionate and those who were forced. He felt them in colors.

Isaac felt the different myriads of the Scholars, the officials of the Fireflies. Luca was disheartened and confused. Mary was disgruntled and ready to burst out anytime save for a hint of silver that bottled her to her duty.  Rhea's color was different though. She was gray and dull but silvery and ashen. It was the same with Andrew from far away.

From the sky he felt many things as well. The numbers of the star were uncountable but he remembered the places and the reaches of the heavenly bodies. He felt it all. The shape and the cold stare of the moon hidden beneath above the clouds. He knew too of the clouds forming in the sky. The direction of the wind, eastward and downward. The slope of the snowy mountain near them. The rolling pebbles led astray by the dancing wind. The dirt and ground that formed the outer layer of the mountain. The tall trees of pine triumphantly scattered but unabundant. Some of which were stricken with few leaves while there were those laid toppled on the ground and slanted clinging on for pride. He could not see beneath the mountain. Nonetheless they were not alone.

He felt the presence of a few bandits and deserters waiting for passersby and odd jobs to come. Their colors were as varied as the fireflies themselves but they were dulled and watered down.

He paused for a moment as there was a sudden change of wind from the sky. The clouds were violently forming a storm. It was brimming in anger. He looked back and saw a pillar of light ascending up to heaven. He felt his captain’s presence and he proceeded on to his given order. The clouds stopped and dissipated. A beam of moonlight shone towards where his captain was. Leon had just averted a brewing storm.

Isaac arrived at the abandoned village. It was filled with empty houses. The doors and windows were smashed. Only the windows on upper floors were intact and left untouched. There were stalls, beside each house, covered overhead by thick linen cloth. On top of the tables were dividers, though roughed up, worn out and unorganized, still lined across. There were gardens and vases too, once filled with hardly striving produce, empty and aged. It was apparent the village was once bustling with merchants and diligent kind folks.

At the center of the village was a building with no door and an empty hall. Four strong wooden pillars held the center. Connected by a wooden wall and in the center another pillar, made of stone and a set of stairs leading up. On the top of it was a cracked bell. It was a village hall for events and meetings. The tables and chairs were crookedly lined forming a roundabout for ideas which once flowed around. It also served as a learning facility with the stacked up chairs and tables of miniature in size and the almost empty bookshelves by the walls. Dusts and aged stains littered all of its corners. Not a hint of its previous tenants can be traced. It was as if they had all vanished.

Isaac was not able to detect any trace of magic except for what had had happened to Andrew.

He approached the building Andrew was thrown off. The wooden shed was half destroyed. The roof almost fell down but clinged on. The walls of the shed were thick enough to withstand the impact except for the wall that Andrew was thrown in. It was empty and desolate except for the broken wooden shelf and crates that caught Andrew's descent.

Dust was scattered in the still air. Wooden rubbles and chipped off splinters were everywhere. A recent healing magic was performed. Andrew lies on top of the mess unconscious. His neck arched way back from his body that leaned on the toppled shelf. He was resting on his right arm, his left leg bent beneath him and his right leg caught beneath the wooden remains of a new aftermath.

"He will feel numb and sore once he wakes up," Isaac thought as he approached Andrew. He used his magic to lift up his fallen comrade. Andrew was covered in dust and sand. His clothes and armor were torn and bent. Traces of magic were present where his clothings tore open.

Before Isaac could take a hold of Andrew, a small golden ball fell from his slump body. It rolled over and immediately grew in size. Isaac noticed and immediately tried to grab Andrew. A blast of air separated the two. Isaac was thrown outside the empty streets.

"So there were two Owed among the insects?" It was the same ominous voice that trapped them in a dimension of the fake Jerusalem. "Andrew, this man will take your brother away from you. What are you going to do?" continued the ominpus voice.

Andrew's closed eyes fidgeted and tightened and his fingers twitched. He gently landed down on his feet. His back slightly arched. He lifted his right hand and covered his eyes.

"I don't know what to do anymore," Andrew's voice was trembling. The color of Andrew that Isaac could see changed. From dull and ashen to silvery and white. "I won't. I won't give my brother away. I will protect him at all costs." His fierce eyes peered in the gaps of his fingers. He was determined to protect his brother at whatever the cost. His left hand on his side was shaking.

"Is that your resolve or a very convincing bravado?"  mocked ominous voice. "No matter, it will hurt. Excruciatingly." The golden ball floated and erratically shot and bounced everywhere. "Brace yourself, little trickster." Isaac ran towards Andrew but a blast of air threw him to the broken bell on top of the village hall. The bell fell down and a loud metallic clang echoed.

The golden ball launched towards Andrew and attached to his left arm. It had bit him. Andrew swayed his arm trying to free himself. He screamed in pain. The bite of the golden ball tightened. It clenched more he tried freeing himself. He grabbed it with his free hand but it was no use. The golden ball smiled. It bared vicious fangs and sharp teeth. The bite buried deeper beneath Andrew's flesh.

"Could you not bear with it?" the ominous voice asked.

"N-n-no! No m-more!" Andrew hysterically shouted. "No more!!"

"The pain your brother bears is a few folds more compared to this." the ominous voice spoke and laughed. "And you would want to protect him?" The bite of the golden ball loosened. Andrew's face felt a little relieved but the pain was still there. "I will help you."

"P-p-please," Andrew begged. The golden ball released its bite. The smile on its face was still visible. It licked its lips with a menacing blood red tongue. The golden ball grew bigger. A goofy looking eye opened on top of the golden ball's mouth and bit Andrew whole left arm. Andrew screamed and tried prying the creature's mouth open but he couldn't get a grip. He hit it hard over and over but it only made the bite tighter. He poked the golden ball in the eye. The creature blinked in pain and loosened its hold. Andrew tried pulling his arm but it was too late. The golden ball forcefully bit off Andrew's arm. The golden ball moved back and chewed his meal.

Andrew quickly crawled back as he stared at the creature chewing his arm. The ominous voice laughed.

Isaac jumped out the top of the village hall and shot toward the golden ball. He landed near it and casted a lightning spell. The golden ball looked at its attacker with conceit and continued chewing. His attack was ineffective. Isaac was irritated and kicked the creature with all his might. The golden ball flew toward the sky. A metallic clang and a loud crash was heard.

The laughter of the ominous voice reverberated.

Isaac looked towards the village hall but felt nothing was there and the recently fallen bell was there untouched. He looked at the sky and noticed a crack that had formed. The golden ball bounced off an invisible wall. There was a fissure in the sky. He knew they were once again caught in trapped.

Isaac went to Andrew and tried helping him up. But was thrown far back by Andrew's left fist. When Isaac stood he saw Andrew's left arm was assimilating golden dust. A floating golden ball flew towards Andrew and slowly stopped beside him. Andrew's missing limb have been replaced by a monstrous synthetic arm and glowed golden yellow.

"Does it hurt?" asked the ominous voice.

Andrew jumped towards Isaac as he threw another punch. Isaac felt the bloodlust and tried dodging it. He barely succeeded in evading the punch but he still felt the pain just from the wave of Andrew's fist. Isaac jumped further back. A portion of his armor was shattered and the cloth from the evaded impact was torn. Andrew smiled as he saw blood dripped from Isaac's arm.

The moon ripped open horizontally and smiled. A sinister shape pupil emerged in the middle.

Andrew ran towards Isaac and readied his fist. His hand glowed red as he threw a punch. Isaac braced himself and blocked the blow with his forearm. Andrew smiled as his hit landed.

"Aren't you a getting a little to cocky?" Isaac asked. His overall armor was shattered and his shirt was blown to pieces. His forearm was bruised and battered but it was healing quickly. He smiled as he countered with a right hand blow. But he stopped. He remembered his order to keep Andrew safe. Before his fist could hit he diverted and hit the air beside Andrew's head. It caused a wave of wind that blew off a portion of the village and a small crack was formed in the air.

Isaac leapt back and breathed a sigh of relief. He was glad he didn't kill what he was supposed to keep safe. He calmed himself down to lower down his power output and raised his fists. He was ready for a restrained match. Andrew was shocked and could not able to move.

"It's good you dodged that. I almost killed you," Isaac playfully said and smiled. "Let's go for round two."

Andrew went back to his senses and laughed disheartedly. He was doubting himself if ever he could defeat Isaac. But he remembered something important. His brother Leon. He steeled himself and accepted Isaac's invitation. He dodged Isaac's blow by a hair. But he knew it was not a fluke. He knew himself it wouldn't hit. Andrew knew he was far better than Isaac. He had nothing to fear. He obtained powers way beyond than what he used to have. He was better, stronger and far superior. Andrew raised his fist for a fight.

"Shut up!" Andrew shouted. "I knew you'd miss even if I didn't dodge that." He believed Isaac's lie. His competitor smiled. "You're mocking me?!" Andrew dashed towards Isaac.

"Am I?" Isaac smiled as he dashed forward. He caught Andrew right hand punch to his left cheek. He knew there was nothing to worry about it. He pretended to get hurt but Andrew knew.

Isaac pushed back Andrew's right arm with his left hand. Andrew followed with another punch from his right fist once more. This time, Isaac bent backward and dodged the blow. Andrew saw it an opening and kicked forward with his left leg. Isaac dodged to the left. Andrew whipped his left leg hitting Isaac's chest. Isaac was forced back. He tried leaping forward but suddenly stopped. Isaac noticed Andrew's left hand.

"You knew?" Andrew stood straight with his left fist ready. It was glowing red.

"No," Isaac replied. He was counting how many hits he have received. "I mean, yes. You're holding back, right?" He happily added and smiled.

"Stop mocking me!" Andrew shouted as he punched the air in front of him. It was like Isaac's punch. He tried dashing side ways to dodge but it failed. He was caught in the impact. The invisibles walls have formed cracks everywhere and was about ready to shatter any moment. Almost half of the small village were now destroyed. Dust lingered in the still air. Rubbles and wreckages were scattered. The town hall in middle was in total ruin..

"Did I defeat him?" Andrew thought out loud. He paused for a while processing what was going on. He did not know how he should feel. He won against Isaac. But his victory felt empty. He was lost. Then a thought occured in his head. He remembered, he did it for his brother.

Andrew then remembered Mary, his brother's fiancee. He had not yet thought how he would deal with her. Thoughts of murder came to his mind. He would have to kill his brother's fiancee if he had to.

He looked at his bruises and had just remembered his hard earned victory. He set aside his dark thoughts. He just had to think about it when it comes. He felt exalted and triumphantly raised his fist. "I did it!"

A snap was heard which reverberated throughout village. Much like the trap they were caught in before, a crack formed in the sky and split the moon in two. The invisible walls the abndoned village shattered and fell piece by piece. Each pieces disintegrated into dust in mid air. The moonlight that shone through revealed the village to be intact and mostly untouched except for the wooden shed that Andrew fell through.

"Was it all an illusion?" Andrew looked around. He was filled with disbelief and fear. He did not anticipate what had happened. He held his left arm and felt something was not right.  It was not his arm.  He tried channeling magic through it and felt an immense power coming from it. The power in his left arm was real. He paused dumbfounded as he felt a presence behind him. He turned around.

"That was four," Isaac emerged from the shadow in the walls of the wooden shed. He was unharmed but he was naked. His clothes and armors were obliterated. "I aimed for a harem not this silly indecency."

Isaac reached out beside him. His arm disappeared in the air. After a moment he pulled a pair of sandals, pants and a desert robe. He snapped his finger and he was immediately wearing his new garments. He sighed in disappointment. He had just lost one of his favorite clothing.

Andrew leapt forward and tried punching him. Isaac quickly dodge to his left and touched Andrew's left arm with his fore finger.

"We have to seal this first." Isaac said. Andrew's power waned and he felt exhausted. He fell to his knees and tried fighting with his sudden urge to fall unconscious.

"W-w-what did you do?" Andrew asked with a weakening voice.

"It's not me but you," Isaac replied. "You cannot control the immense power you just acquired. Even though it's incomplete. It is powerful nonetheless." Isaac walked in front of him and sat with his legs bent. "You're just a human who just recently acquired the powers of a god. And the god that you acquired your powers from is not yet complete."

"A god?" Isaac asked as he mustered his strength to stand. He failed. "Just like the powers my brother have?"

"Yes, but not quite," Isaac replied. "The rest you must acquire." Andrew's eyes widened. He read it in one of the records once. Those Owed by the World have to acquire the power of others to become complete. He knew his brother was one. He had just realized he became torn to his brother's side. Isaac noticed and smiled. "You only need to if you want to."

"What do you mean?" Andrew asked. But his consciousness fade as Isaac touched his forehead.

"Your memories for now have to be sealed as well. I'm sorry," Isaac replied as he carried Andrew on his back.

Cracks in the Jar

Leon found himself in a dark black world. He could see nothing else but himself. He was still impaled by the dark red tendrils. He did not feel much of the pain but he knew he was. He tried to move but he couldn’t. It was as if he was both stuck frozen and conscious.

“Mary," he said to himself. “I’m going to make her cry again.”

A speck of light flashed in the horizon. Distant voices, faint and gentle, echoed through the darkness. Leon tried moving but it was futile. He was unable to move. The echoes grew louder. He noticed it and tried shouting but nothing came out of his mouth. He couldn’t shout. The voices grew clearer. He was familiar with these voices. He wanted to shout. He tried channeling his magic throughout his body but his mana was leaking from the tendrils. He was going weak.

“Is this all, Leon? Aren't you Owed by the World?” he thought to himself. He once more tried channeling magic. He focused on gathering energy from the sole of his feet. Radiant white light covered the darkness beneath him. Orbs of light started appearing around him. The tendrils of shadow dissipated to nothingness.

"Mary, I'm sorry," Leon said as he collapsed.

Leon's body fell flat on the ground. Blood gushed out his punctured wounds. His decapitated left arm was the worst.

Mary and Rhea ran at the body of their fallen captain. Luca wanted to run to her captain as well but Isaac held her back. He glanced at the surroundings. The Scholars of the Firefly was in the middle of the desert. Ruins of an abandoned village can be seen in the distant. The night was cold. The desert air was dry and the wind that rolled down the snow was moist. Flowing sands in the horizon were heard. And in the mountains echoed faint sounds of dirt and pebbles falling.

"Stay close to me," Isaac whispered to Luca. Her strength to go to her captain faded as she remembered her past. She was petrified to move and held tightly onto Isaac's hand. "I'll protect you." Isaac let loose two invisible orbs of energy from his palm. One went to the sky and the other sank to the ground.

Mary threw herself to the blood caked sand and crawled to Leon. She didn't care about anything else. Her captain laid flat on his chest covered in bruises and bloodied. She was shaking as she turned him on his back and saw his face. It was as if he was having a peaceful dream, all the while covered in blood. He saved his brother but she knew. Both she and her captain knew. She looked at Andrew menacingly. She was furious.

"He must not look like this," Rhea's mind was blank. She fell on her knees contemplating what she had done. "It's my fault. It's my fault." She kept on repeating.

Luca extended her hand trying to reach out to her captain. Isaac breathed a sigh of relief when the invisible orbs he released returned with nothing. They were safe. He let her go.

Rhea crawled cross the blood covered sand as she tried reaching out to Leon. Luca was crying when she threw herself and hugged the delirious Mary.

Andrew was on his knees rising. When Leon switched places with him. He never knew it could get worse than he had planned. He was shocked to see a casualty on his silly foolery. More so it was his beloved brother that took the brunt of his mischief. When his brother's arm flew off he fell on his knees and tried letting out vomit. He never wanted things to go that way. And it was all his fault.

"I didn't wan-" Andrew's trembling voice was cut short when a blast of wind threw him away to an abandoned house. Debris fell as dust and sand scattered in air. Andrew was hidden in the wake of the impact.

"You ingrate!" Mary shouted. Her voice brought Rhea back to her senses. The vice captain calmed when she noticed Leon's blood on her dried up and crumbled.

"Mary!" Rhea stood up and tried pulling Mary back by her shoulder. She shook it off and gazed at the adventurers sternly.

"Fireflies!" Mary shouted. The commanding officer blew his trumpet. The Fireflies went in formation. They stood in lines in front of their vice captain "Gather closer!" The rank of adventurers moved a few steps forward. "Melee to boxed perimeter! Give space for the range! Station four arrows and four to corner magics! Supplies to the cen-"

"Mary!" Rhea shouted. "What about the captain?"

"What about him?" Mary angrily said. "Supplies and intelligence archives brought to center! Those in charge hand me the records and regroup with the defences," she once more shouted. "Medics! Go check up on other Fireflies!"

"How could you?" Rhea asked Mary. Her face was blank and expressionless. She couldn't understand her superior. "Leon is.. Leon is.."

"Isn't it about time now, Leon?" Mary said. Her eyes were listless as she kept up a serious face. "Luca, go with Isaac and heal Andrew. I swear, if he was not Leon's brother I would have definitely put more."

"This is not the time to kid around, vice captain!" Rhea shouted. Most of the stains of blood from the three officials have mostly dried up, crumbled to the air and got absorbed to a faint orb of blood subtly becoming visible. Isaac noticed.

"I.. I'll.. I'll heal the captain," Luca said.

"Don't bother with him, Luca," Mary said. "Do as you're told and go treat Andrew."

"Vice captain Mary!" Rhea shouted. "I'll ask the other medics to take care of Andrew. Luca's the most-"

"Rhea! You're clean?" Luca pointed at Rhea's clothes. She was covered in blood and now not a trace of red hue was on her. clothings.

"Owed?" Rhea eyes widened. She traced back in her memory of what had just happened. "The captain is an-"

"For someone as smart as you, Rhea," Mary said in a condescending tone. "You let your heart misjudge your insight."

The orb of blood has become visible. It continued assimilating the blood that dissipated into the air. The blood that covered the sand beneath Leon was almost no more.

"Sometimes, Mary, I wish you could show even just a little bit of restraint." It was Leon's voice. But Mary knew it was not him. He was breathing heavily.

He slowly stood as blood dripped from his decapitated arm. But right after touching the ground it became dust and got absorbed by the orb floating beside him. The bloodstains on him got assimilated as well. The orb of blood was growing.

There were holes in his clothes and armor. Beneath his punctured leg armor, lines of fissure were visible like that of cracks on glass. The wounds on his torso and right arm were throbbing. His breathing was erratic. The orb of blood upon reaching its peak glowed red. Leon quickly smashed it with his fist. As if the red orb had materialized, it shattered. His body subtly glowed and in an instant shone blinding light.

When the radiant light died down. Leon appeared standing with a missing leg. His wounds have closed.

"I supposed I lost another limb," said Leon with a disgruntled voice. He snapped his fingers and specks of white light materialized to dust and slowly assimilated to where his missing arm and leg was. It grew slowly from bone to sinew of veins and muscles. He clenched his newly formed fist and waved his arm. He wiggled his toes before he slowly lifted his new leg and shakingly kicked the air. He was once more complete.

"Captain?" Luca softly spoke. "What happened? How did you-"

Leon stretched his new arm and with his palm aimed where Andrew was tossed. He glanced at Mary and smiled.

"Leon will definitely get mad if you keep doing this kind of thing to his little brother," the captain said to Mary. Green light flashed inside the ruins where his brother was.

"You healed him?" Luca asked. She was dumbfounded.

"Good job, Isaac," Leon said. He gazed at Isaac with an authoritative look. Isaac looked back. He knew all along it was not his captain that spoke. The captain of the Fireflies smiled and quickly glanced towards his younger brother's whereabouts. Isaac immediately understood and ran quickly to fetch Andrew. It was what his captain wanted.

When Isaac was gone, Leon looked intently at Mary. She was still mad at his younger brother. Both of them knew. Her face frowned in anger. Dark clouds started to form in the sky but immediately dissipated. The moonlight beamed towards Leon. He was smiling.

"Captain," Rhea said. "You're alive."

"Of course, I am. Why wouldn't I?" Leon spoke with a peaceful smile on face as he collapsed once more.
